This video demonstration will show you how Incisive Validate monitors Excel's behavior of external workbook updates. We start this demonstration with a workbook called "formulas" that references another workbook called "external_data". The workbook called formulas has been completely audited, and each formula and value has been approved. We will update the externally referenced workbook during an Incisive Validate session, and see how Validate monitors these changes and alerts us when updates to the external data affects the currently audited cells in the workbook, "formulas".
Validate and External Reference Updates
- We start with two workbooks: One with formulas called "formulas" and one with data called "external_data".
- We start Validate by loading a previously saved Validate session. We are currently in a 100% approved state
- Now, we'll go to "external_data" and update values by changing 0's to blank cells - simulating a possible data import error.
- When we click back to the workbook being audited, we can see that the approval / disapproval is cleared for those cells with changed values. We also get a dialog which alerts us to that fact.
- We can see in the Validate History that some approvals were cleared. Goto Selection will navigate to the cells location that is shown in the history dialog.
- We can mark a cell as suspect to see where it comes from in the external workbook using the Fault Investigator.
- We find that the cells are incorrectly blank instead of of having a zero in the cell. This is leading to the bad values in "formulas".
- After correcting the data, we can reload the saved Validate session, and see that we are again 100% approved cell values and formulas.
